This image was taken on 7 December 1972 by the crew of Apollo 17.
It was taken at a distance of 29,000 kilometers or 18,000 miles from Earth, about 5 hours after launch while the Apollo 17 spacecraft was on its way to the Moon.
Interestingly, the original photograph was taken upside down. But it was flipped before distribution to fit expectations of north-up orientation.
